To MSM or Not to MSM

April 18, 2009 | Fertility, Food, and Fabulous Finds

As I was making my typical morning shake the other day, I just happened to read the label of the powdered MSM bottle that I use. Now, I've been using MSM to reduce inflammation for years, so what possessed me to read the label is beyond me.

Imagine my surprise when I read that MSM should not be used by anyone who is pregnant, breast-feeding, or trying to conceive. Those exact words..."trying to conceive." How did I not know this and, more importantly, why can't I use it?

I immediately jumped online and found the all-too-common differences of opinion. The Natural Health Information Web site indicates that while the medical literature has not reported any adverse effects regarding fetal development and use of MSM during pregnancy, they still advise checking with your doctor before use during pregnancy or breast-feeding. Ditto from www.msmguide.com.

Dr. Jacob's MSM-DMSO Web site (www.jacoblab.com) reiterates the same warning as my product (avoid if pregnant, breast feeding, or think you may become pregnant).

Then, there's the "iffy" advice from www.arthritis-msm-supplements.com (remember, MSM is an anti-inflammatory). They say, and I quote, "Pregnant women boast about the benefits they get from taking MSM during pregnancy. Some say how this product helped with the annoying symptoms that come with pregnancy. Pregnant women's complexions improve and aids in the relief of constipation... My advice to all pregnant women is to check with their own physician."

Finally, the Web site falconblanco.com (a natural health and meditation site) suggests avoiding MSM during pregnancy and nursing due to the "rapid detoxing" that can occur with use, arguing that the "MSM itself is not harmful, but the toxins flowing through the system can be too strong for an infant, since they are flushing out at a rapid rate."

Okay, so that makes sense. So, add MSM to my list of HAVE NOTs during this time of anticipated conception.
